An evening of poetry

On Monday night students from King's High School, Bayfield High School and Queen's High School gathered in the King's Library to take part in a poetry workshop with James Norcliffe.  James is a poet and author, and this year he is a nominated author for a Children's Book Of The Year.  He is also currently the writer in residence at Otago University.  His visit to King's was part of the New Zealand Post Book Awards celebrations.

He spoke to the students about the power of memory in creative writing and he read examples from his own work and also well known poets such as Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes amongst others to illustrate his point.  Although the students didn't do very much writing themselves in the workshop they came away with many ideas they could use in their own writing.

NZ Post Quiz night 2012

Last Thursday night two teams of eager young men from King's took part in the annual NZ Post Book Awards Quiz.  The event is held at the public library and is an evening of great fun.  This year we entered two teams of four, all from 9RG an all eager readers and who we hoped would have the general knowledge necessary to do well.  The boys performed really well, we took a third equal and a fifth equal against much bigger competition and we were really pleased with our boys who had read almost all the books nominated, and studied hard to learn about the authors.  Here are some photos of the event.
