White Cat by Holly Black
The author of this book, Holly Black, is very keen on writing dark stories, she is the author of the Spiderwick Chronicles which are like a strange dark children's series, but this book takes it to a new level.
This is the story of a guy called Cassel, who is fourteen and who belongs to a family of magic-workers. Since magic is illegal the family have to operate in secret and have become a kind of underground mob involved in all kinds of dodgy dealings which Cassel is aware of but doesn't really know the details of. He is rejected by his nasty brothers because he can't perform magic and is therefore useless to them in their crimes. He is cared for by his Grandfather because his Mum is in prison, it is a pretty tough life, but he tries to fit in with the guys at school and cover up as best he can what is going on at home.
Cassell has some other problems, he wakes up on the roof of his boarding school in the middle of the night, it is a great scary scene, and notices a white cat, it appears some force has been propelling him there, and while other weird things are happening to him too and the white cat appears to be connected to him somehow. Add the best friend that Cassel is supposed to have killed, is she really dead? There are lots more things you will find out about him a the story goes along. This book really has the feel of a book at the opening of a series and there will soon be another instalment in The Curse Workers. It is recommended for more senior students.
This is suspenseful and sinister story. It will get under your skin and you will get caught up in Cassel's world while he tries to figure out what is going on and who he can trust.
