Back to School for 09

Welcome back to school guys.

Hope your holidays were great! Here at King's there was major activity in the library over the holidays. As mentioned in previous posts new carpet (very styley) was put into the library and nearby classrooms, giving us a smart new look, and new ducting for the computer cabling was installed and now the cables are being put in place. This will give us much faster network speed and that is a very good thing!

Lots of great new books were released over the holidays and already they have started to come into the library. New books by Conn Iggulden, Jim Butcher, Valerio Massimo Manfredi, Terry Brooks and Bernhard Schlink have been purchased along with lots of others.

Here is one that is a great read, which has been in the library for a while, but which I think many many boys will love:

Smashed by Mandy Hagar

Set in Auckland, Smashed is the story of very intelligent good boy Toby, his sister Rita who is a bit of a handful, and his dodgy friends Carl who is good hearted but prone to trouble and Don. Smashed is the story of how bad things can happen to perfectly good people, when a party goes bad. Toby finds himself in a mess when he ends up in trouble with the police and takes the blame, and his life takes a turn he could never have predicted.

This book takes on big issues, issues that affect ordinary teenagers all the time. It is a funny book, it is a sad book and it really gets into youth culture and parental issues, and how terrifying it can be when you are a good kid caught up in big trouble. It is a great book for students in the senior school and is thoroughly recommended. Mandy Hagar has written teenagers in a real way and the students who have read this book have really related to the characters. I will certainly buy more of her books for our boys.
