The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness
Chaos Walking: Book One
On the back is this book is a quote from Frank Cottrel Boyce (who wrote Millions) which states that this book has "One of the best first sentences I've ever read and a book that lives up to it!" The first sentence is "The first thing you find out when yer dog learns to talk is that dogs don't got nothing much to say. About anything."
In Todd Hewitt's world you can hear the thoughts of all the people around you, you can hear animals thoughts, it is like a constant stream of noise, never quiet, so that you have no privacy, you cannot get away from the sound of people thinking and you don't have any secrets. When boys (and there are no women in this world) turn 13 they become men. Todd finds a patch of silence, and a huge surprise in the swamp by accident. Then there are questions that cannot be answered by the people who love him and he must leave. He, his dog and a girl called Viola are on the run.
This book is totally engaging, Todd and his dog Manchee had me totally absorbed and I became desperate to keep reading to find out what was going to happen to them. Their world is so well described, the people they meet are interesting and I'm now anxiously waiting for the next book in the series, and to read his other books.
