The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
This is my book of the year so far! Set in the future in a world not unlike ours except the political environment is totally different.
Imagine a reality tv show called The Hunger Games, where representatives of the various districts of a country must send 2 competitors to fight to the death. Imagine these competitors were aged between the ages of 12 and 18 and it is compulsory for the whole country to watch them and compulsory for people to enter the games.
This is the story of Katniss a girl of 16. She is used to hunting and making sure her family are fed by hunting and gathering food for them. Her home life is challenging, her mother has never recovered from her father's death and she has a little sister who she loves a lot. Katniss ends up competing in the Hunger Games.
This story is really fast paced. It was so exciting that I did very little this weekend except read this book. I think that people who have liked the Noughts and Crosses books will really like it. It is the first book in this series and having been to the website - don't do that until you have finished the book because the characters on the website didn't look anything like I had imagined them when I was reading. Next book due out in October and I can't wait.
